Opening times vary depending on the time of year. Please see http://www.romanbaths.co.uk/visiting/opening_hours.aspx for full details.
As perhaps the best-preserved example of a Roman bathing site in the world, as well as being a site of natural geological curiosity due to its hot springs, the Roman Baths provides great opportunity for learning. In our teaching sessions, students are encouraged to speak up and given the opportunity to handle real Roman artefacts.
We have a specially designed education space with a stunning view overlooking the Great Bath. It is probably the only teaching space in Britain in which children are positively encouraged to look out of the window! It is definitely the only one with a secret floor panel, through which you can look down to the great Roman drain four metres below!
Key Stage 1: Roman Times
A 1-hour activity session exploring Roman life in Bath. Take a view on the past, try on togas and handle real Roman objects.
Key Stage 2: Meet the Romans
A 1-hour interactive session exploring History, Literacy, Numeracy and Art. Handling, observation and the "Counter Challenge" offer pupils the chance to explore Roman bathing at this historic site. An opportunity to touch real Roman artefacts!
Key Stage 2: Roman Life
A 1-hour interactive session, covering general aspects of Roman life. Choose one handling session focused on either bathing, buildings and technology, or cooking and food. Add 2 activities chosen from Togas and Tunics, Write On, or Marvellous Mosaics to make your own combination. Touch real Roman artefacts!
Key Stage 3&4: Romans Revisited
The observation, investigation and handling of artefacts and sources offers pupils the chance to explore Roman bathing and Roman life at this historic site. This also encourages them to make important links to their own lives today.
This session allows pupils to build upon key skills, such as evaluation and interpretation, as well as encouraging them to come to well-reasoned conclusions based on analysis of evidence.
Key Stage 3&4&GCSE: Welcome to Aquae Sulis
A 1 hour session for Latin and Classical Civilisation students. The session includes a presentation on the site and the people who came here, and artefact handling.
