Open daily 28th March 31st October 2011 from 10am to 5pm (last boat sails).
King Arthur's Labyrinth is an exciting underground adventure where groups travel, by boat, deep inside the vast caverns of the Labyrinth and far back in time. Guided by a hooded boatman groups explore the dramatic underground setting whilst enjoying tales of King Arthur and other ancient Welsh legends.
King Arthur's Labyrinth is set in the vast, disused caverns of the old Braich Goch Slate Mine (worked from 1836 to the early 1970's), providing a perfect case study for changing economic activity.
Within the Key Stage 2 History curriculum King Arthur's Labyrinth fits with the Myths and Legends requirement of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons & Vikings in Britain programme of study. The Arthur we tell of is a Dark Age warrior fighting the Saxon invader to bring peace to the Island of Britain.
Fitting with the Curriculum Topics of English and Welsh King Arthur's Labyrinth provides an exciting multi-media environment to develop oracy skills, complete with narration, tableaux, lighting and sound effects. The Labyrinth provides an environment which helps develop a learner's understanding of the cultural identity unique to Wales.
Fitted with a hard hat and guided by a mysterious Dark Age boat man, visitors sail underground, through a waterfall and across a thousand years, deep inside the Labyrinth. Walking through the vast caverns of the Labyrinth, visitors enjoy Welsh tales of King Arthur and other ancient Welsh legends. Dramatic scenes, light and sound effects accompany the stories. The visit includes a 1/2 mile walk through the caverns.
An Activity Pack (published by Domino Books, £2.00) is available based on King Arthur’s Labyrinth. Our own booklet, "King Arthur’s Labyrinth" (£2.00), provides a more advanced historical background. Secondary pupils and college students will find that the presentation lends itself to further work in the social studies and literature curriculum.
To benefit from our group rates, the minimum group size is 15. Each boat trip seats approximately 20 people, for larger groups, additional boats can be booked. One teacher is permitted free with every 10 children.
