Monday to Saturday 10am till 5pm
Carnglaze Caverns is an old Slate Mine, hand carved by local miners over a hundred years ago. There are 3 cathedral sized caverns housing an acoustically magical top cavern known as the Rum Store where the Navy stored their rum during WW2. This cavern has a stage where performers from Suzi Quatro to the Cornwall Youth Orchestra's perform to large audiences yearly. The caverns are set in 6.5 acres of woodland scattered with beautiful bronze faery statues and has a vine conservatory which transforms into a classroom for up to 30 students. The gardens are lovely in all seasons and have picnic areas for visitors.
Science and the Arts are well covered by the staff at Carnglaze and all those who have been on Educational Visits have expressed delight in the site & all it has to offer the students. The science students benefit from seeing first hand the for example how slate is formed and Arts students can not help but be inspired by this tranquil jewel in Cornwall's crown.
All our activities can be tailored to suit!
Carnglaze is also a tourist attraction and can not help educating all it's visitors! We are happy for groups from the age of 0 to 100!
Carnglaze Caverns also offers a Sensory day at Carnglaze
TOUCH Opportunities to touch and handle different rocks and minerals from our vast collection, plus feeling the hand tools that were used here for mining in the 19th century.
LOOK The stunning visual aspect of Carnglaze is compensated for by the use of word pictures which describe what the visually impaired cannot see.
SMELL The damp cavern air enhances smells amongst the sensory experiences.
LISTEN The excellent acoustics of the Rum Store are contrasted by the echoing acoustics of the lakeside in the third cavern.
TASTE The fresh spring water from the lake can be tasted at the end of the tour.
