Yr5 residential, Stubbers Adventure Centre

by headteacher on 24th May 2010
Department:
Art and Design
Year Group:
Key Stage 2
Venue Region:
England
Town:
Upminster
Summary:
One person in my group who found all the activities extremely difficult being naturally fearful of nearly everything, exited the tunnels on the last day so proud to have completed the task with the rest of his group, that they actually looked 4" taller. This is still true after being back in school for 2 weeks. The staff member responsible for getting the group through the task and achieving such a massive success for all the children, has achieved more than we could at school in a whole year!
Venue: Stubbers Adventure Centre
Quite simply the best multi-activity outdoor pursuits centre in Britain!
Accommodation: Maple Lodge
Looking a little dated, but superb catering and a wonderful bean-bag room for relaxation and review times.
Benefit:
Children grow enormously in their ability to face challenging situations, develop resilliance and work as part of a team.
Plus points:
Well prepared/trained/motivated staff capable of understanding children's fears and cajoling them into tackling even the most challenging tasks.
Superb and well maintained equipment.
The most amazing wildlife, set in a beautiful and secure site - 'Springwatch meets the Krypton Factor'.
Huge bonfires with marshmallow-roasting and songs.
Opportunities for everyone to succeed at something they were sure was beyond them and so raise thei expectations of themselves.
The best high ropes systems i have ever seen...much better systems than 'go ape', or others of that ilk, for developing groups and individuals.
Staff with specialist knowledge about wood-craft and the natural world who were willing to give impromptu talks to fascinated children.
All superb.
Minus points:
None at all really! The staff could not do enough for us, even offering to build camp-fires and take the group for evening 'nature walks'.
Overall:
