Year Group:
Key Stage 2
Venue Region:
England
Town:
York
Summary:
Really enjoyable and great fun for all the children, definitely a place to take children!
Venue: Various places around York city centre
We take the children to York for 3 days and 2 nights, we have fun packed days to various places, we have ben running this residential from our school for the past 5 years and all the children enjoy it thoroughly. We start off by visiting the Castle Museum, there the children have a chance to see various things from history and fill in a booklet which they find to be educational and fun-keeps them engrossed whilst walking around the museum, there is also the chance to book a victorian school classroom, this allows the children to experience Schooling in victorian times. Our next treat is a Ghost Walk through York, the person who takes us around delivers child friendly stories of York with the occasional scare factor involved, the children really enjoy this and recommend it to the next year 5 too. We also Visit the Railway museum, which also has a questionnaire attached-the children are fascinated by the different trains and even have a chance to sit in a Bullet train from Japan. The Jorvik centre and Dig are a combined excursion, the children have the chance to see history through the eyes of a viking whilst sitting in a ride in the Jorvik centre and in the Dig there is a fantastic opportunity for the children to dig up artefacts from the past. There are also classes that you can book, we have had the viking class booked in the past and it has been excellent. To finish off our residential we also take the children Eureka, in Halifax on our way home, this has excellent science links and the children enjoy the play and learn element.
Accommodation: Wheatlands Lodge Hotel
This hotel, situated on Scarcroft Road, is very near the city centre, it is within walking distance of all the places we visit during our stay. The hotel has surpassed all our expectations, the staff are fantastic with the children and the hotel itself, i
Transport: Holmeswood
Excellent service, we always use this company for all trips, prices are reasonable.
Benefit:
There are ots of history links during this trip, the vikings in particular, the children learn a lot about history and how the influence of the vikings play on what we have today. The Eureka museum is linked to the Science curriculum of the Body.
Plus points:
National Railway Museum is free to go to and the children enjoy this.
On the second night of our stay we take a new release DVD with us and the hotel rearrange the dining room to allow the childrent to watch and have some popcorn and treats too (provided by us)
The hotel are faultless in catering for children who have allergies, we have had a child who was diabetic and coelic and they provided fantastic meals for her during our stay.
Minus points:
We tend to walk everywhere during our stay, for children who have disabilities a wheel chair will be needed or other transport arrangements would need to be in place.
Overall:
