Year 1 trip to the zoo

by mariah on 26th November 2008
Department:
General
Year Group:
Year 1
Venue Region:
East-Midlands
Town:
Twycross
Summary:
We booked the trip to fit in with our topic on animals. It was exactly what we needed, the children learnt so much not just from the
trip but from the follow up work we were able to do at school the following week. The only thing I would say was that not all of the
zoo staff were friendly and accomodating. When booking the trip we had some trouble negotiating a room that we would need for a
disabled child. Also our pre-trip visit posed a problem. As we had 4 classes booked to go we assumed that all 4 class teachers would be able to go
to see how the zoo would be accessible for their children and how we would organise the children for the day, we were only allowed 2 members of staff and were told that the others would have to pay.
Venue: Twycross Zoo
Easy to navigate around the zoo, maps given were clear
Benefit:
Very useful for our topic on animals, children were in awe of all the animals they saw. Session led by zoo was lovely.
Plus points:
Plenty of space! lots of other schools there but didn't really notice them.
Range of animals - from the huge giraffes to the little mice.
Lots of toilet facilities - great for when you have young children.
Minus points:
Not many places to sit and have a picnic, there was a seating area but we had to take it in turns to use it.
Nowhere to shelter if it suddenly started raining!
Overall:
