Royal Marsden Hospital - Medical Imaging

by chriswilshaw on 3rd October 2009
Department:
Unknown
Year Group:
Sixth form
Venue Region:
London
Town:
Sutton, Surrey
Summary:
We took Year 12, principally to learn about imaging techniques in cancer diagnosis and treatment. (This fits in with the Imaging topic in the OCR B Advancing Physics AS Syllabus) but students also learnt some of the basics about cancer, LINACs, Gamma rays and antimatter. Students particularly enjoyed visiting the PET and CT scanners and a radiotherapy treatment room where the scanning of treatment was contextualised and some of the functions of the equipment was demonstrated (E.g 180 degree movement of the treatment head around the patient and masks for keeping the patients face and head still when treating head and next cancers) Mike Partridge, a Medical Physicist, arranged the visit and with the aid of two other Medical Physicists gave our students two talks and a tour of the facilities. Mike was absolutely superb on this and a previous visit, pitching the content at exactly at the right level and discussing Cancer in a sensitive but informative manner.
NB: Visits are only possible after 5pm as the hospital treats patients throughout the day. Our visit took place from 5-7pm.
Venue: Royal Marsden Hospital (Specialist Cancer Hospital)
Benefit:
Imaging topic in the OCR B Advancing Physics AS Syllabus
Plus points:

Free visit.

Cost only £1.50 each for students and £5.40 each for teachers for group travel card for tube and bus.

Good for introducing students to alternative Physics careers options.
Minus points:
Takes a long time to get to by tube from North of London.

The hospital were able to accomodate our group of 30 AS Physics students but would usually prefer groups of about 15 or so.
