Residential visit to York visiting museums and Danelaw Village

by megs on 12th March 2009
Department:
History
Year Group:
Key Stage 2
Venue Region:
North East England
Town:
York
Summary:
This is a long established trip that really inspires a love of history in our children many of whom are keen to take part again.
Tour Operator: York Time Travel
Excellent personal service.
Venue: Various museums and sites in and around York
National Railway Museum: Fantastic opportunity for children to appreciate the growth of the railway. The Royal carriages are particularly fascinating. The Interactive Learning centre has lots of activities to develop an understanding of rail transport which are great fun.
The Minster. Fabulous awe inspiring cathedral and the Minster Education Centre is brilliant. We could always spend more than the allocated time on the many activities provided for the children.
The Castle Museum: Fantastic for the study of home life through the ages and the Victorian Street is wonderful.
The Ghost Walk: Specially adapted for Key Stage Two children is exciting and inspires super creative writing.
The Dig: Brilliant for developing archaeological skills with a wealth of evidence from a range of past times. Really demonstrates the layered history of York.
The Jorvik Centre. Constantly improving. The portrayal of Viking life is exceptional and this year our Viking guide, Adam, was excellent.
Danelaw Village. No study of the Vikings could be complete withiout a visit to Danelaw Dark Age Village. Amazing fun whilst learning about the everyday life of a Viking. An opportunity to reenact a day in a Viking village, in costume, whilst carrying out tasks such as farming, guarding, weaving, grinding corn, cressit oil lamp making etc. The staff are enthusiastic knowledgeable and dedicated.
Accommodation: Carlton House Hotel
First rate rooms, excellent food, owners very helpful and understanding of children's needs. Hotel locked at night and not open to the general public when a school is visiting.
Transport: Don Fraser
Friendly, reliable service by a company local to school.
Benefit:
As well as meeting the needs of the history curriculum, many other areas are visited such as PSHE, RE, Geography, Science. The learning over the four days is incredible.
Plus points:
The social skills developed over the visit are most beneficial.
The Merchant Adventurer's Hall is a great place to eat a packed lunch but it is not free. However it is a most interesting building. There are lots of activity sheets available too.
Minus points:
Four days is definitely long enough as everyone is exhausted by the end of the visit.
The lunch room at the Dig is very busy.
Overall:
