History trip to Skipton Castle and Bolton Abbey

by jtaylor on 25th September 2009
Department:
History
Year Group:
Key Stage 3
Venue Region:
England
Town:
Skipton
Summary:
Superb castle visit with knowledgeable and interesting guides. Suits a variety of age groups.
Venue: Skipton Castle
An excellent combination for a History trip - a guided tour of the Castle is available and small cafe is open.
Transport: Hodson's
Prompt, clean, friendly - a bit pricey.
Benefit:
Links to yr7 Medieval and yr 8 Making of the UK
Plus points:
Skipton castle has good guided tour available that last for about an hour and a half which is great for attention span of children. Each area is covered. Guides attemt to get pupils involved e.g. a role play of a Banquet in the Castle, role play of firing arrows as a guard. In the rain, pupils have access to a small room where initial background is covered. Cafe available although only small and there's also a small shop for souvenirs. Lots of the Castle is available to view. Dungeons where guides can turn lights off. If you choose not to use a guide then help sheets are available. Task sheets also available. Badges are given out at the end as a little souvenir for pupils.
Minus points:
Cafe is a little pricey for pupils and only small - perhaps a packed lunch is best? There is no on site parking, so coach has to drop off and pick up at the gates. We took the drives number to call him when we were finished.
