Geography trip to Grey Mares Tail, Moffat Valley

by teach on 6th October 2009
Department:
Geography
Year Group:
Key Stage 4
Venue Region:
Scotland
Town:
Moffat
Summary:
A great day out that is talked about in school year on year. A taste of wilderness that can wet the appetite for more and a great way to carry experiencial learning in current economic climate.
Venue: Grey Mares Tail
An outstanding National Trust site within and a true taste of Scottish Wilderness on the doorstep
Benefit:
A real challenge to walk up the waterfaal path to Loch Skeen at the top. While you are wealking you see many river and glacial features as well as discussing the mamagement of this wild place. Once the walk is completed the Moffat River at the start of the walk is a great place for some rivers fieldwork.
Plus points:
Wonderful views along the trough of the Moffat valley. A real challenge that is within the grasp of most pupils. A small cafe a few minutes away by coach has public toilets and hot food! If you lead the trip yourself the visit is free.
Minus points:
No toilet facilities, so bacterial handwipes are needed before lunch is eaten and children need to be aware that they are 'going wild'. All walkers need to be prepared for hillwalking inclusing waterprrof gear and good boots.
Overall:
